Giving Thanks with an Open Heart

This is one of our favorite times of year in the United States—the time of giving thanks. When you give thanks for your many blessings, you open yourself to receive more of what you are thankful for. That is, if you express gratitude with an open heart.

You are told that this wonderful holiday commemorates a harvest meal shared by European settlers and the indigenous peoples of America four centuries ago. For the settlers, it was a time of thanking God for their deliverance to a better life in this “new world” and for the abundance that was generously shared by those who had already lived here for eons. That’s very significant. Here was a group spiritual refugees who made the arduous journey across the ocean to they knew not what. Their faith in God drove them forward. And when they arrived, they found that God had “set the table” for them through the help of generous souls who gifted the settlers many things that enabled them to survive their early years. In their mutual admiration, these two peoples of completely different heritage, culture, language, lifestyle, understanding of the world, and approach to God all shared a meal of thanksgiving.

Giving Thanks for the Channel of Your Abundance

You all know that the mutual benevolence did not last. Once established in the land of America, the settlers soon began to demand more than their share of the resources of this great land. As many more arrived, the indigenous came to be seen as a nuisance and a threat. Over the centuries, they were marginalized in countless ways. So certain were the newcomers of their own understanding of themselves and God that they found all manner of ways to justify the often brutal means of taking what they wanted. Although the Thanksgiving celebration honors the provision of great abundance to those weary travelers seeking their highest good, it wasn’t long before they sought to change and even destroy the wonderful channel through which God had provided for them.

We ask you to consider how often you do this in your own lives—turn your back on the benevolent channels of God’s great abundance. How many times do you require your abundance to come a certain way—one that fits your vision of what God is and what your earthly goals are—rather than saying simply, “Thank you, Spirit, for the abundance you have provided me. What is your will that I would do with these tremendous gifts? And how shall I pay them forward?”

Many of the early European settlers had an attitude of arrogant thankfulness. They were thankful for their blessings, indeed. But instead of honoring the channel through which their blessings came, instead of seeking to learn from the benevolent attitude with which hospitality was shown them, they interpreted the arrival of God’s gifts as evidence of the righteousness of their own beliefs. Ironic, isn’t it? How often do humans likewise see the arrival of abundance as proof that you are somehow more deserving than others—that perhaps you have more of God’s favor? In other words, how often does your abundance place you above others in your own thinking? Do you use this to justify your own ill-will toward others? Does your abundance create in you an attitude of, “God has showered me with blessings, but has not offered the same blessings to ‘them’, so they must not deserve it as much as I do.”?

Seeing the Oneness of All

Friends, everybody is equal in God’s eyes. You are all family, each and every one of you without exception. When you are not here in the physical body, you are absolutely aware of this Truth. But when you come into the earth plane you forget it completely. As we have said, this veil of forgetfulness creates the playing field of the game of life, and a big part of your success in this game is waking up to the remembrance of this Truth. Anytime you see anybody else as less deserving of God’s great love and abundance, you are missing the point of your existence. You are, in fact, limiting your own connection with the Divine Source you share.

At this time, there are many new ‘pilgrims’ seeking a better life in this great land of yours, and in other lands of opportunity around the world. But many have closed their hearts to these seekers. Many see them as a threat. They think, “That person or group wants to take what’s mine,” as though you can actually own anything on the planet.

You are all simply using what you need from creation—and many of you are using much more than you need. That’s fine, because you live in an infinitely abundant Universe and are free to co-create whatever you desire. But your belief that something is yours and that you are somehow more worthy and deserving of it than someone else keeps you from opening your hearts to others seeking a better life. It creates a fear of lack and limitation that actually separates you from your Source. This thought process may not be conscious, but it’s running in the background for many humans. It’s there because they don’t yet embody a belief in the oneness of all life and the absolute connection of all things to God in equal measure, with no limits and no exceptions.

Imagine what would have happened if those original Pilgrims had been met with such an attitude. Your ancestors would not have survived their first winter. Now imagine what this land could be like today if those newcomers had recognized the great benevolence of their hosts and said to themselves, “God has delivered us and answered our prayers. There must be great significance in these benevolent channels He has chosen. We must open our hearts wide to them and seek to learn all that we can from their own understanding of God, for surely they are instruments in His hands.” Might you have a much more compassionate society if such an open-hearted attitude had been the foundation upon which society was built? Might you even have avoided some of the socio-economic challenges facing your society today?

You see, God does not divide. God only unites. Humans divide. By doing so, they separate themselves from God. Many humans have so twisted the meanings of your sacred scriptures that you believe the opposite is true. But the Divine Truth is that God is never for building walls and never for excluding anyone from the fruits of creation. Never. You are free to do both if you choose, but when you do you are distancing yourself from the Heart of God.

Practicing Gratitude with an Open Heart

We ask you to ponder this in your time of giving thanks for your blessings. As you reflect upon all the good you enjoy, do you do so with an open heart and a desire to be a channel of God’s blessings to others in the same way the indigenous were to the Pilgrims? Is your prayer, “Thank you, Spirit, for all the good I know. May I be an instrument of your infinite blessings to all who seek them, for I know your supply is inexhaustible, and I will always have all that I need in this life.”? Or do you thank God for your abundance in one breath and in the next breath start talking about how some other person or group seeking His blessings needs to be kept from getting what’s yours? Think on this. How thankful are you really? Thankful enough to be generous with your blessings without fear that God’s supply can somehow be exhausted?

Indeed, it is a favored time of year because so much gratitude is offered up. Families get together to celebrate one another, your tremendous blessings, and the kindness the indigenous peoples showed to your ancestors centuries ago. As you enjoy your meal together this year, we ask you to be aware of those who are still seeking what you already enjoy and ask Divine Spirit to open your heart wider to them. Ask to be a blessing to the seekers of the world so that they may know the peace and comfort you know—no matter how much or how little is currently manifest in your life. And pray that they will also pay those blessings forward as they come to realize more for themselves.

Our sincerest wish is that every human will say on this wonderful day and every day hence, “I am so thankful for what I have, and I wish the same blessings for all humankind. I choose to be an open door through which God’s abundance pours forth to all who seek it with a compassionate heart, and I pray that all humanity shares in this desire. Let us all be swept up in a never-ceasing and ever-expanding cycle of gratitude and generosity.”

We are pleased to be with you all at this time, and we thank you for making space to receive this message. We send our tremendous blessings and thanksgiving to you all.
